Galt endorses garbage center, extends marijuana moratorium
Ross Farrow Lodi News Sentinel
Galt, CA June 29, 2005 -- In other action Tuesday, the City Council extended a moratorium on medicinal marijuana dispensaries another 10 months, 15 days, to allow attorneys and Police Chief Doug Matthews to investigate how a dispensary would affect Galt if one was built in the community. The council had issued a temporary 45-day moratorium on May 17.
Jean Cowsert, a 20-year Galt resident, told the council there are several medicinal marijuana users in Galt who would benefit from a dispensary locally. The nearest dispensary is in Sacramento.
"There are people who cannot make the drive to another city," Cowsert said. "It's not like the criminal element is coming in."
Baldwin, who said he sympathizes with people in ill health, suggested that perhaps medicinal marijuana could be better controlled if it is issued by pharmacies only.
