The Oakland City Council will be considering an ordinance to regulate medical cannabis facilities in the city on Nov. 18th (City Hall, 7 PM). Among the measures under consideration are a couple of highly objectionable proposals that would greatly restrict available patient services in Oakland.

(1) Limiting the number of clubs. Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente is pushing to restrict the number of clubs in the city to 3 (or maybe 5). This would limit competition and force some existing clubs to close. Rather than an arbitrary limit, we are advocating a complaint-based system, where clubs could be closed for specific misconduct or misbehavior.

(2) Banning on-site consumption. Council member Jean Quan has proposed an end to on-site smoking or use of medical cannabis. This would seriously inconvenience patients who feel sick and need to medicate, and would end up forcing them to smoke on public streets instead.

(3) Banning mixed-use facilities. It has also been proposed to prohibit "mixed use" facilities that sell coffee, food, or other products as well as cannabis. These facilities provide a useful service to the rest of the community, and offer patients a place where they can bring family, friends and kids.

Urge the City Council to oppose these restrictions on access to medical marijuana! Tell them you support the existing clubs and value the services they provide.

Oakland residents are urged to make their views known to the Council before the Nov. 18th meeting.
