Bronx DA Won't Prosecute Marijuana Grandma New York, NY Apr 30, 2007 -- The Bronx district attorney has decided not to prosecute a 71-year-old grandmother busted for possession of marijuana.
DA Robert Johnson says they did not have all the supporting documents needed, so Barbara Jackson was let go Monday morning. She was arrested on March 13 with two bags of marijuana, that she says she smokes to restore her appetite after undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer. Jackson says she's been smoking the pot for eight years. Her attorney, Ronald Kuby, said before the court hearing, that he hoped that Johnson had more important cases than prosecuting a grandmother for medicinal marijuana. Jackson told the Daily News that she weighed 98 pounds in 1998 after cancer treatments and she couldn't eat. She says the marijuana calms her stomach and allows her to keep food down. |
